Title: Emergent computations for emerging technologies
Abstract: One of the most vibrant research communities of today is the one around materials and devices which exhibit quantum properties and effects. Such materials are investigated for their quantum information processing capabilities and, in particular, regarding quantum computing. This high risk – high gain research area opens the opportunity to make a contribution with a novel approach to solving computational tasks. The proposed approach is a bottom-up, hierarchical approach based on the manipulation of the material dynamics at the lowest physical level through the emergent patterns, properties and behaviors observed at higher levels. As such, it is inspired by the principles of biological complex systems, i.e., the systems evolved in nature whose functionality is tightly related to the physical properties of their tissue. Such an endeavor is inherently interdisciplinary and it assumes collaboration with the research groups from the related fields, primarily physics, material sciences and nano-electronics.The results of such an interdisciplinary research may provide solutions to some of the challenges quantum computers face today.
